However, the cutting of turf by those with turbary rights for use in their own home would continue.
Furthermore, the gifting of turf to friends and neighbours would be effectively outlawed.
Tightening regulations around selling turf is one step in fighting "the biodiversity crisis", according to the Irish Wildlife Trust.
There's been some backlash from rural TDs since the announcement and a Dáil motion opposed to the change is expected to be brought forward.
