He believes it was an opportunistic homophobic attack by people “on the hunt” for someone to assault.
"Last night, at nine o’clock on my way home with some food, crossing the traffic lights just outside my apartment, three lads pulled up in a car – and jumped out of a car – and jumped out and attacked me and punched me to the ground," he said.
He added: "God, I’m lucky actually but I’m sore because they kicked me in the head a couple of times. An amazing American couple walking by started screaming and the manager from the place on the corner came out and the police were there in seconds."
In an update on social media, he said: "I’m sure I’m fine, just I reckon I have a mild concussion, my head is thumping. It’s not good enough to be set upon on the street where you live and end up on a Friday in f*****g A&E with a concussion.
