A rape victim has described her experience of the criminal justice system as ‘devastating and cruel’ and said it was like an out-of-body experience to have her underwear shown in court.
The woman, who cannot be named to protect her identity, said the trial was ‘traumatising’, described her cross examination at the Central Criminal Court in Cork as ‘highly humiliating’ and said her counselling notes being read by the defence was a further violation.

She said the crime was an ‘utter violation’ of her ‘mind, body and soul’ and urged other victims of sexual violence to speak out to reduce what she described as the social silence ‘these monsters thrive in’.
Judge Siobhan Lankford remanded the accused in continuing custody for sentencing on the 11th of April.
