Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin is facing renewed pressure from his party's backbenchers over the handling of last week's fuel protests.
Members are calling for an urgent parliamentary party meeting to discuss the party's leadership try and restore trust in Fianna Fáil.
Former ceann comhairle and Kildare South TD Seán Ó Fearghaíl, TD Paudie O’Sullivan and Senator Anne Rabbitte have written to the party chair asking for an urgent meeting to be convened, to discuss the future of Fianna Fáil and its leadership.
The group are calling for discussions on the “loss of connectivity” with grassroots supporters, the party's current standing and "leadership initiatives".
It comes after three of Fianna Fáils youngest TDs issued a statement yesterday, strongly criticising the coalition's response to national fuel protests last week.
James O'Connor, Ryan O'Meara and Albert Dolan wrote: "It should not require protests and deep community frustration to get a government to act and listen.
"This is not about challenging any individual or singling out any member of government."
