The number of hospital patients with Covid-19 has increased by almost a third in the past week.

994 new cases were announced by the Department of Health last night, with 80 people in hospital and 22 in ICU.

On Monday, international travel will open for people who have been fully vaccinated, recovered from the virus or recently tested negative.

Gerry Killeen is a UCC Professor and co-founder of ISAG which advocates for Zero Covid, he believes now is the time to allow only fully vaccinated people travel, while also considering a ban on intercounty travel for Covid-19 hotspots.

A member of the National Public Health Emergency Team says the country is still three or four weeks away from the peak of the Delta wave.

Dr Mary Favier said there's concerns around younger people and those who chose not to get a vaccine, as they are not the majority of new cases in recent weeks.

Dr Favier, who is Covid-19 adviser for the Irish College of GPs, says there's a race against time to get as many people as possible fully vaccinated:

A UCD Associate professor says the spike in covid case numbers has happened faster than he was expecting.

ISAG member Julien Mercille expects cases to go up due to the reopening of society.

He's concerned too many unvaccinated young people may get infected and cause more serious illness
