Meanwhie, Fine Gael's Seán Kyne overtook Independent Ireland's Noel Thomas after a tight final count in Salthill to take the Galway West seat.
The former TD and senator who had stepped away from politics, says he wants to "do a better job in the Dáil this time".
It was a bad weekend for Fianna Fail in both bye-elections, with a second last finish in Dublin Central for John Stephens, and Cillian Keane missing out in Galway West.
