The final teams for the knockout stage will be confirmed later

SOCCER

Germany are out of the World Cup.

They beat Costa Rica 4-2 in Group E last night - but Japan's 2-1 win over Spain saw the Germans eliminated on goal difference.

Japan topped the Group and will now play Croatia in the last 16 next Monday.

Spain will face Morocco on Tuesday.

The final teams for the knockout stage will be confirmed later.

Portugal are already through, and they face South Korea in Group H at 3pm.

Cristiano Ronaldo set to be rested for that game.

At the same time, Uruguay face Ghana - Uruguay must win, while a draw could be enough for Ghana.

At 7pm, Brazil meet Cameroon and it's Switzerland versus Serbia.

Brazil have qualified and Serbia must win their match - a draw will be sufficient for the Swiss unless Cameroon win.

The news emerging from Brazil is that playmaker Neymar is in danger of missing the rest of the tournament with an ankle problem.

RUGBY

Former Ireland out half Ronan O'Gara has told the Irish Examiner that he has eliminated himself from consideration to coach the England national team in the future.

The Corkman has admitted there has been contact from England, with current coach Eddie Jones believed to be under pressure.

O'Gara is hoping to commit to a longer term in charge of European champions La Rochelle, with the French club believed to be keen for him to stay.

In the United Rugby Championship tonight, Munster are away to Edinburgh from 7.35.

It will be John Ryan's 200th appearance for the province.

Tonight's game, and all others in the competition this weekend, will be preceded by a moment's applause to honour the late Doddie Weir.

GOLF

Ireland's Tom McKibbin is in a tie for 14th spot on day two of the South African Open.

He lies on 5 under par, five shots behind leader Thriston Lawrence.

Gary Hurley has moved to 4 under par.

Meanwhile, Shane Lowry is five shots off the pace after round one of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

HORSE RACING

Dundalk at 5pm.
