ATHLETICS

Widespread tributes have been paid to athlete Ciara Mageen, who died yesterday morning, a year after being diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer

The two-time Olympian and 2024 European 15-hundred metres gold medallist has been hailed as a "role model for all athletes" following her death at the age of 34.

Along with her European gold in 2024, she won European bronze in 2016, silver in 2022 and a silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

She holds Irish records in the 800 metres, 1000m, 1500m and mile.

The Olympic Federation say Ireland lost a hero, who had the "affection" of her teammates and competitors around the world.

GOLF
Ireland's Liam Nolan has secured a DP World Tour card for next season.

A final round of 67 at the Hotel Planner Tour's Grand Final has seen him finish in the top-15 - and with it a Tour card.

SOCCER

Arsenal have gone back to the top of the Premier League with a 1-nil win away to Liverpool.

It was the defending champions' first victory at Anfield in the top flight since 2012.

The result ends the hosts' five-match winning run in all competitions.

Celtic suffered a first defeat to Falkirk in 19 years, losing 2-nil in the Scottish Premiership.

Hib and Rangers will meet in the Scottish League Cup final, after Hibs beat neighbours Hearts 2-1

RUGBY

The Irish rugby coaching team are hopeful that Sam Prendergast will be fit to face Argentina on Friday.

The Suncroft player has been recovering from a wrist injury, sustained in Leinster's win over Munster last month.

Eadestown's Jimmy O'Brien is also available after injury for Friday's game
