The province have confirmed his decision to leave - with reports linking the former Racing and Stade Francais coach to the top job at Bath.
Prendergast is in his fourth season with Munster where he helped the team to its URC title win in 2023.
On announching his departure the Limerick native says that Munster will hold a "special place" in his heart.
