Serena Williams has won her first match in what will be her final Grand Slam event.

The 40 year old American beat Danka Kovinic in the opening round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Williams came through in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 and will now face Anetta Kontaveit of Estonia in the next round.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner was delighted with the support from the crowd:

Wimbledon men's singles runner up Nick Kyrgios has won his first round match.

The Australian defeated his fellow countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets.

Rafael Nadal is in action later against Rinky Hijikata, with Carlos Alcaraz to play Sebastian Baez.

Britain's Emma Raducanu will begin the defence of her women's singles title against Alize Cornet.

SOCCER

Derry City are up to second in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division following a 1-0 win at Shelbourne last night.

Dundalk lost 2-0 away to Sligo Rovers.

And St Pat's won 3-1 at Bohemians.


In the Premier League tonight there are four games.

Crystal Palace face Brentford and Fulham take on Brighton, with both of those matches kicking off at 7.30pm.

Southampton play Chelsea at 7.45pm.

And it's Leeds versus Everton at Elland Road from 8pm.
