93 per cent of members want some form of action over working conditions
A decision will be made tomorrow on what industrial action Gardaí take for the remainder of Ireland's EU Presidency.
The Garda Representative Association executive committee will meet tomorrow at 10am to discuss a survey showing more than 93 per cent of members want some form of action over working conditions.
The GRA is accusing Garda management of breaching agreements on working hours, rest days and overtime.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Vice President of the GRA John Joe O' Connell said dissatisfaction among Gardaí is due to "continued breaches" of the Working Time Agreement signed in December 2024, an agreement of shift patterns, hours worked and rest periods.
"Since the start of this EU agreement, we have had senior Garda management deciding the Working Time Agreement is kind of in the way, and is a bit of a nuisance."
To police EU presidency events, O' Connell says "about 70" days off have been cancelled across the country and must come in to work shifts as long as 16 hours at times, "with very little breaks between shifts":
"An overwhelming amount of our members are just very frustrated with what has happened with their terms and conditions, which was an agreement signed by all Garda staff associations," he added.
Garda O ' Connell added that members have never declined to "put their shoulder to the wheel" when it comes to these extraordinary EU presidency events taking place.
He concluded by alluding to Gardaí from the Kildare division who had been working at Druid's Glen Hotel in Wicklow for the EU presidency, leaving Naas Garda Station at 7pm and began duty, which was supposed to be for 12 hours, but O' Connell remarked that they weren't relieved until "11:30am or 12pm" that day, instructed to be back in Wicklow again at 7pm that night.
