A Kildare Fine Gael TD and Minister of State contends Sinn Fein's no confidence motion in Simon Coveney is a "stunt".
The motion on the Foreign Affairs Minister has been tabled following the now-defunct appointment of ex minister, Katherine Zappone to a UN envoy role.
Sinn Fein has tabled the motion in response to what it describes as "cronyism".
It will be debated this evening, and has the support of Labour, the Social Democrats and People Before Profit.
