Council officials say the Flood Risk Management Team is already in discussions with the Office of Public Works about installing gauges on the River Liffey in both towns.
Electronic river gauges are being considered for key points along the River Liffey in Kildare to strengthen flood monitoring and climate preparedness.
A group of councillors - Pádraig McEvoy, Angela Feeney, Rob Power, Peggy O’Dwyer, Chris Pender and Carmel Kelly - has called on the council to work with stakeholders to install electronic water-level monitoring stations, including at Clane and Newbridge.
Council officials say the Flood Risk Management Team is already in discussions with the Office of Public Works about installing gauges on the River Liffey in both towns.
The devices would provide real-time river levels and long-term hydrological data to help inform future flood risk management measures.
The council noted that climate trends are increasing the urgency of improved monitoring.
It says global analysis shows each one-degree rise in temperature can bring about a seven per cent increase in rainfall.
