Kildare Fire Service are sending the message "Know Your Room, Know The Risk, Know The Person" for this year's Fire Safety Week.
It runs from 12 October until 18 October, highlighting the importance of understanding the fire hazards that may exist in spaces we use every day.
Speaking on Kildare Today, senior assistant chief fire officer for Kildare Chanel Ryan asked for people to establish the fire risks that are present in their home:
"What I'm asking people to do today is to take a fresh look at your home, and the fire risks that may be in your home, there's a lot of things that we do that we take for granted.
"Charging electrical devices, smoking, cooking, when you actually look at it, they are fire hazards within your home and could cause you damage if you're not careful."
She also emphasised the importance of having a working smoke alarm, while recommending for alarms that are more than ten years old to be replaced.
When it comes to testing smoke alarms, Chanel believes it's "just about getting into a habit of doing it".
"Even if it's once a month, once you're testing it and know it's working," she added.
"It [fires] an really happen anywhere, people always talk about fires happening most in the kitchen, and that would be at times when you're cooking, and even if you look at your living room and maybe there's an open fire or heating source.
She advised against lighting candles, remarking that it's like "bringing a mini-fire into the home".
In relation to charging devices, she urged people to charge phones on a hard surface to allow for ventilation, while also advising for appliances such as e-scooters to be charged in a small room "that's not being used" and for them not to be charged at night.
Throughout Fire Safety Week, Kildare Fire Service will be promoting fire safety with "simple, practical fire safety advice and tips" that they want people to share with neighbours, friends and family, in the hope that "we can all play a part in keeping our communities safe from fire".
