It follows figures released from the Irish Road Safety Authority (RSA) to the Irish Road Haulage Association under FOI

New figures have revealed that Kildare had the biggest decrease in learner permit holders in the county compared to last year.

The county experienced a decrease of 517 in learner permit holders, falling from 19,583 in 2025 to 19,066 in 2026.

Kildare was only one of 4 counties in Ireland to record a fall in the number of learner drivers on the counties roads.

Clare (128), Meath (332) and Roscomon (71) also recorded decreases.

It follows figures released from the Irish Road Safety Authority (RSA) to the Irish Road Haulage Association under FOI.

Overall, there were 388,090 learner permit holders on Irish roads at the end of March 2026 - 6,219 more than at the same date in 2025 - one year ago.

Dublin still has the highest numbers of learner permit holders (121,127) increasing by 2,262 learner drivers in 12 months.

Cork has the second highest number of learner drivers in the country (42,810) an increase of 150 learner drivers in 12 months.

The figures show that the largest cohort of learner drivers (95,868) are between the ages of 30- 39 indicating that drivers are leaving it late to undertake their driving test. 81,538 learner drivers were between 17-20.

462 learner drivers nationally were over 80 years of age.
