Owners of XL Bullies across the county are reminded that February 1 is the deadline to apply for a Certificate of Exemption to legally own their dog.
After this date, it will be illegal to own an unregistered XL Bully, and unregistered dogs may be seized by local Dog Wardens or Gardaí and face euthanasia.
To be eligible for an exemption, XL Bullies must be microchipped and neutered.
Owners of dogs that have not yet been microchipped or neutered are urged to take action within the next two weeks to avoid losing their pets.
In response to the potential financial burden on some dog owners, the Kildare and West Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KWWSPCA) has received funding from the Department of Rural & Community Development, through the ISPCA, to help individuals on social welfare in the region cover veterinary costs.
While the scheme will cover the cost of neutering, owners will need to cover the cost of microchipping, should their dog not already have one.
