He expressed his "deep gratitude" to the local communities who placed their trust in him
Peter Melrose has today (20 October) announced his decision to step down from his role as a county councillor on Kildare County Council.
In a statement, the Social Democrats councillor for the Maynooth LEA expressed his "deep gratitude" to the local communities who placed their trust in him with their vote in the 2024 local elections.
Speaking to Kfm News on the decision, Melrose said:
"Representing the people of Kildare has been an honour and a privilege. I became a councillor to champion change in our community, advocate for local services, and ensure voices of young families like mine were heard clearly at municipal and county level."
However, he accepted that the volume of work and the ever-increasing demands had risen to an "unsustainable level", as he found it difficult to balance his council commitments and work as a primary school teacher, as well as family life.
Melrose also believed that Government reform measures to support local representatives "will not bring the improvements that are desperately needed".
As a final word, the north Kildare representative thanked a number of people who had supported him along his journey:
"I want to extend my deepest thanks to every resident, community group, and local business who supported me throughout my time in office. I will continue to support the Maynooth LEA and Kildare in every way I can.
“I am looking forward to spending more time with my family, meeting up with friends, and finding time for the little things again," he concluded.
The formal resignation has been submitted to the Chief Executive of Kildare County Council.
Details regarding co-option to fill the vacant seat will be managed in accordance with council procedures.
