It comes as the broadcasting levy is set to rise by 39% this year
MEP Ciaran Mullooly has called for urgent Government intervention after an announcement that the broadcast levy is to rise by 39% this year.
The Independent Broadcasters of Ireland has said that the State has got the balance badly wrong if it expects local broadcasters like KFM to absorb sharp new regulatory costs.
MEP Mullooly said radio is being hit particularly hard compared with other regulated sectors.
The published 2026 levy table sets the sound broadcasting rate at 2.8% of qualifying income above the €500,000 threshold, compared with lower rates for TV, audiovisual media services, designated online services and hosting services.
Mullooly said he is calling on the Government to urgently review the burden being placed on radio, re-examine the balance between Exchequer support and industry levies, and protect the viability of local broadcasting before long-term damage is done.
