More than €10 million has been paid out to homeowners in Kildare under the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, helping bring 184 vacant or derelict homes back into use.
Figures published today by the Department of Housing show €10.14 million has been issued to Kildare applicants since the scheme launched in July 2022.
Under the scheme, homeowners can receive up to €70,000 to refurbish a vacant or derelict property for use as a home or rental accommodation, with payments made on completion of works.
Meanwhile, almost €400,000 is owed on derelict buildings across the Kildare–Newbridge district alone.
When a building is officially classed as derelict, the owner is charged a yearly levy.
The levy is 7% of the property’s market value, per year.
Of the 16 properties, five buildings are now in council ownership, with unpaid levies deducted from payouts.
