Micheal Martin was speaking at the annual Wolfe Tone Commemoration in Bodenstown yesterday.
The Taoiseach has said Ireland’s flag is being misused for narrow politics, saying those who claim to solely represent Irishness “dishonour our national flag.”
Speaking at the annual Wolfe Tone Commemoration in Bodenstown yesterday, Micheál Martin said the tricolour was created to reflect an inclusive nationalism.
He told the crowd: “Whatever your ideology, you dishonour our national flag if you claim that you alone represent Irishness or our political aspirations.”
Mr Martin said those who use the flag to suggest a fixed national identity “do not understand our history,” adding that Irish identity has survived because it has evolved and become more inclusive.
He said his government will “stand with Europe” in defending democracy.
He also used his speech to reference Presidential Candidate Catherine Connolly, who he said is as an example of individuals critical of EU policies.
