WATCH: Exhausted And Frustrated - Resident Says Maynooth Roadworks Continuing Through The Night

Tuesday, 21 October 2025 16:44

By Martin Osborne - Head of News. Got a story? Email news@kfmradio.com

The works are part of Kildare County Council’s Active Travel project, involving the resurfacing and realignment of Mill Street.

A local resident from the Mill Race apartments in Maynooth has written to Kildare County Council describing what they call “significant and distressing noise” from resurfacing and realignment works - activity they say has continued late into the night, sometimes until 3am.

In their email, which was forwarded to Kfm, the resident outlined how there’s been little warning or communication about the late-night construction, which has caused what they describe as “constant lack of peace,” particularly affecting vulnerable residents, including those with autism.

They said their partner who has autism has been "moved to tears by the constant lack of peace".

Maynooth Social Democrats Cllr Peter Melrose told Kfm that more time should have been given to communicating with residents.

The works are part of Kildare County Council’s Active Travel project, involving the resurfacing and realignment of Mill Street, across from the Manor Mills shopping centre in Maynooth town.

A road closure order was granted by the council last Monday, October 13th, lasting until this Friday, to allow contractors to complete the works.

Cllr Melrose said he has been in contact with the project manager, who confirmed the team has “given themselves a wide window” to finish the works, and that the most disruptive nighttime activity should conclude by Friday.

He said the pedestrian crossing and traffic lights are being realigned as part of the project, and that while noise has been an unavoidable part of the process, the worst of it is now over.

Cllr Melrose added that the decision to carry out the resurfacing at night was made to “minimise traffic disruption” but acknowledged that the impact on residents has been considerable:

“It’s not great. Nobody likes noise disruption - especially in an area with hundreds of people living either side of the site. Unfortunately, with it being a publicly owned road, the planning process is different to private development, where such work would not normally be permitted overnight.”

He said he empathises with residents and has urged the project manager to engage directly with the local community and improve communication.

The works form part of a broader active travel scheme expected to continue until the end of the year, with overall completion of the project scheduled for December 2025.

Meanwhile, residents are considering filing formal noise complaints under the Environmental Protection Agency Act, citing the council’s own guidance that “excessive noise can seriously harm health and disrupt sleep.”

Kfm has contacted Kildare County Council for comment.
