The car then crashed into a set of double glass doors at the rear of the property.
Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating an incident in which a car was driven through the gates of the Co Leitrim home of Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny.
Officers attended the scene of what is being called a "road traffic collision" at Deputy Kenny's home near Ballinamore early yesterday.
The TD says it was 'very traumatic' for his wife, who was alone in the property at the time.
Martin Kenny says the incident took place at 2 o'clock yesterday morning at his home in Aughavas, Co Leitrim.
A van drove through the electric gates at speed and past the end of the house.
It crashed into a set of double glass doors at the rear of the property.
Deputy Kenny, who's Sinn Féin's justice spokesman, says the driver was taken to hospital.
He says the incident was very traumatic and frightening for his wife.
A Garda investigation is under way, and Deputy Kenny has thanked emergency services for their 'speedy and professional work' at the scene.
