Emissions Reduction Target Of 25% Set For Agriculture

Cabinet Ministers are now being phoned to seek their approval in an incorporeal meeting.

Coalition leaders have agreed an emissions cut for the agriculture sector of 25%.

Following weeks of negotiations an emissions reduction target has been set for the agriculture sector, this means that the sector will have to cut its emissions by this percentage by 2030.

Agreement on the target comes after weeks of fractious talks between Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and Minister for Environment Eamon Ryan.

Minister McConalogue had been aiming for a figure closer to 24% while Minister Ryan had been looking for a figure on the upper end of the scale.

In the end they split the difference between the two.

Cabinet Ministers are now being phoned to seek their approval in an incorporeal meeting.

A press conference to announce the deal is expected in the coming hours.

Fianna Fáil TD Christopher O'Sullivan says a lower target for agriculture than the 30% upper limit was needed:
