It's being discussed today at a Department of Foreign Affairs forum on the provision of good consular assistance.
Professor Helen Heneghan, bariatric surgeon at St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, says that anyone considering having treatment outside the State needs to research and find an accredited facility.
She says that bariatric surgery is usually straight-forward but there are always risks:
