Lost to Inter Milan 1-0 last night, but will progress 2-1 on aggregate

SOCCER

Liverpool are into the Champions League quarter finals.

They lost 1-0 on the night to Inter Milan at Anfield, but went through 2-1 on aggregate.

The loss ended Liverpool's year-long unbeaten run at their home ground.

Lautaro Martinez scored a great goal for the visitors just after the hour mark, but their momentum stalled when Alexis Sanchez was sent off minutes later.

Liverpool hit the post three times during the game.

Their manager Jurgen Klopp knows it wasn't the perfect performance, but he says progression is what matters:

Bayern Munich are also into the last eight.

They thumped Salzburg 7-1 in Germany, progressing 8-2 on aggregate.

Robert Lewandowski (pr: Levan-dov-ski) scored a first half hat trick.

In the last 16 of the competition this evening, Paris Saint Germain bring a 1-0 lead to Madrid, where they face Real.

Manchester City hold a 5-0 advantage over Sporting ahead of their meeting at the Etihad Stadium.

Both games kick off at 8pm.

Fulham now have a 14 point lead at the top of the English Championship following their 5-1 win at Swansea last night.

Galway native Ryan Manning was sent off for Swansea in that game.

Bournemouth, who lie second, drew 1-1 with Peterborough.

Sheffield United and Luton Town have moved into the play off places following respective victories over Middlesbrough and Coventry City.

Troy Parrott scored twice as MK Dons got the better of Cheltenham Town by 3 goals to 1 in League One.

=

In the Scottish Premiership this evening, Dundee face St Mirren.

RUGBY

Johnny Sexton has confirmed he will retire after the 2023 World Cup.

The 36 year old Ireland captain and Leinster out half has signed a new deal with the IRFU until the end of the tournament in France.

Sexton is set to skipper Ireland against England in Saturday's Six Nations match at Twickenham.
