It follows two separate bike thefts recently, as well as another failed attempt to steal a bike

Gardaí have raised concerns following two separate bike thefts recently, as well as another failed attempt.

The incidents occurred in Celbridge and Naas.

In Celbridge, two different incidents were reported on Friday (9 October), on the Maynooth road and on main street.

At 3.50pm, there was an attempt by youths to take a bike from the main street area in Celbridge.

Then at 4:45pm on the Maynooth road near Costa, an angle grinder was used to steal two bikes.

Speaking on Kildare Today's Crimewatch, Naas Garda David Prendergast explained that the bikes were stolen by "up to three youths".

The mountain bikes were the Cube brand, one was green in colour, and the other was grey.

Separately in Naas, on Saturday (10 October) between 8pm and 12am, another bike was stolen from Poplar square.

The Cube-branded "touring bike", which was locked, was gone when the injured party returned to collect it that evening.

All that was left was the lock attached to the bike rack.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to any of these incidents to contact An Garda Síochána.

Garda Prendergast said that the issue is a constant issue, while citing the areas of Kildare, Newbridge and Naas in particular:

"There's incidents [of bike thefts] that I haven't included in today's report, I can't include them all."

"I don't know if it's recent legislation in relation to e-bikes, or what it is, but there's an awful lot of thefts across the county.

"Lock your bike, make sure it's a good secure lock, we have to be mindful of these things, it [theft] often happens during daylight as well."

He also reassured listeners that stolen bikes are often recovered, while urging owners to "take serial numbers and pictures of [their] bikes" and any other information the can, which can be assistance to Gardaí in the event of a theft.
