Given and Gorman into FAI Hall of Fame; Spain Lead Costa Rica 3 nil; Guardiola signs new City Contract

 

Shay Given and Linda Gorman have been inducted into the FAI Hall of Fame.

Donegal native Given is one of six centurions for the Republic of Ireland men's team, following his 134 appearances, which included a record 60 clean sheets.

He featured in the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 and 2016 UEFA European Championships over the course of a20 years international career

He played 451 games in the English Premier League - a record for an Irish player. He won the FA Cup with Manchester City, the UEFA Intertoto Cup with Newcastle United and was twice selected in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

She made her Ireland debut in 1973

The Finglas native was part of the first ever Ireland women's team that beat Wales 3-2 in May 1973.

The defender was Ireland captain when she finished her playing career in 1985, finishing as Ireland’s most-capped female footballer with 28 appearances.

Earlier this afternoon Germany were beaten 2-1 by Japan.


Ilkay Gundogan gave the Germans the lead with a first-half penalty.

But Ritsu Doan levelled four-minutes after his introduction as a substitute, and fellow sub Takuma Asano bagged the winner.

Prior to the game, German players covered their mouths in protest at FIFA banning captain Manuel Neuer from wearing the ‘One Love’ armband.

They released a statement saying human rights are non-negotiable, and they wanted their voices to be heard.


 

Earlier today in Group F, Morocco and Croatia played out the third goalless draw of the competition.

And at 7, Canada make their return to World Cup action for the first time in 36-years as they play Belgium.


 

Pep Guardiola says he cannot be in a better place than Manchester City.

He’s signed a new two-year deal to remain as City manager, and will remain until the summer of 2025.

Guardiola’s deal was due to expire at the end of this season.


 

Celtic have signed Japanese defender Yuki Kobayashi on a five-year deal.

The centre-back moves to the Scottish Premiership champions from J-League side Vissel Kobe.

He'll link up with his new team-mates at the start of next month and will be eligible to play from January.

Kerry GAA is proposing a 72-million euro redevelopment of Fitzgerald Stadium.

County chairman Patrick O’Sullivan told their Annual Convention that the Killarney ground requires a “major refit” that could attract entertainment events.

O’Sullivan says a detailed presentation on how they intend to fund the project will be put forward in January.

Ciara Mageean will lead the Irish challenge at next month’s European Cross Country Championships in Turin.

The European silver medalist is joined by Sarah Healy, Michelle Finn, Nadia Power and Andrew Coscoran.

The 28th edition of the Championships takes place at La Mandria Park on December 11th.
