O'Shea Joins Kenny's Coaching Team; Man City v Leipzig; Ireland Women v China; 4 Kildare GAA Teams Preparing for weekend; racing in Punchestown

John O'Shea is to become an assistant coach under Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny.

O'Shea has been a part of the backroom staff with the Under 21s and will continue a coaching role at Stoke City.

The Waterford native and ex Manchester United star made 118 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.


Manchester City will be without Kevin De Bruyne, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones for tonight's Champions League last 16 first leg tie away to RB Leipzig in Germany.

Tonight's other game is between Inter Milan and Porto.


The Republic of Ireland women's team meet China in a friendly international in Marbella this lunchtime.

Three players are set to make their debuts - Aoife Mannion, Marissa Sheva and Deborah-Anne De La Harpe.


Portugal sealed a 2-1 victory over Cameroon, while Haiti defeated Chile 2-1 in the final qualifying playoffs in New Zealand today, securing berths at the Women's World Cup.

Portugal will be in Group E at the World Cup alongside defending champions United States, Vietnam and the Netherlands

 

Haiti will be in Group D with England, Denmark and China.

Paraguay and Panama will meet tomorrow to decide the final qualifier for this year's World Cup, which will be the first to feature 32 teams.

 

Welsh rugby players will meet their professional board today with the prospect of a strike a real possibility.

National team coach Warren Gatland has delayed naming his team ahead of Saturday's Six Nations game against England in Cardiff.

The dispute surrounds the renewal of contracts and a rule which prevents a player with a club abroad lining out for Wales unless they have over 60 caps.

 

Four Kildare GAA teams are continuing preparations for weekend action.

Leinster champions Naas CBS play Omagh CBS on Saturday in the All Ireland Primary Schools senior “A” football quarter final at 2.15 in Clones.

  • The men senior footballers play Derry in Newbridge at 2pm
  • The hurlers are in Owenbeg to play Derry at 12.30pm
  • The women footballers play Offaly in Tullamore at 11.45am.
