Call For Public Inquiry Into Sallins Mail Train Robbery Convictions To Be Raised In Dáil Tonight

RTE Archives

The case, involving the theft of £200,000 from a Cork to Dublin bound mail train , has long been shrouded in controversy over alleged forced confessions.

A call for a public inquiry into the 1976 Sallins Train robbery convictions will be raised in the Dáil tonight.

Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh is urging the Justice Minister to act on what many see as a  "miscarriage of justice".

The case, involving the theft of £200,000 from a Cork to Dublin mail train, has long been shrouded in controversy over alleged forced confessions.

The robbery took place on the main train line between Straffan and Hazelhatch.

Concerns have persisted for decades over the legitimacy of the convictions, with claims of coerced confessions, lack of evidence, and denial of fair trial rights.

Five members of the Irish Republican Socialist Party were initially arrested in connection with the robbery.
