The Kildare North constituency becomes a five-seater and Durkan, who turns 80 next year, will be putting his hat in the ring at the party selection convention in two weeks.
Time spent in prison apparently made the Dáil’s oldest TD, Kildare North's Bernard Durkan, more resilient.
In 1967, he spent seven weeks in prison, at Mountjoy jail and Portlaoise.
Speaking in the Irish Independent, he said he was imprisoned during a mass farmers’ protest and campaign of civil disobedience.
Despite recovering from major spinal surgery, he said he is still going to run in the next general election.
"I had surgery because several discs in my back went wrong on me, but I have recovered since at home," he said.
