Elderly Woman Held Captive As Burglars Ransack Home In Athgarvan For The Third Time In The Space Of A Year

The 87-year-old is dealing with the emotional toll of the latest incident.

An 87-year-old woman in Athgarvan was kept in her sitting room while her house was robbed by two burglars.

The woman, who lives on the Kilcullen road between Athgarvan National School and Kinneagh Cross, has had her home burgled three times in the last year.

Speaking on Kildare Today, her son James said in the latest incident, his mother was kept in the her living room while another burglar went from room to room and stole her jewellery and other sentimental items.

He said the road his mother lives on does not have a reliable landline network, with her phone disconnecting numerous times a week.

He said a lot of people on the road use a fob that is connected to the phone line, but often times the phone does not work.

He said his mother hasn't been hurt during the incidents but that the emotional trauma is taking its toll.

"The dog created a racket next door. The neighbour came in and these people left. My mother was able to press the button on her fob to raise the alarm. It's so dark and quiet, people can come in unnoticed. It's making the older generation in that area very vulnerable."
