Horse Abattoir License Questioned Due To Director's Animal Cruelty Conviction In 2012

Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Michael Sheahan responded that the conviction “wouldn’t legally prevent” the individual from being a director.

A Dáil committee heard today that a director of Shannonside Foods in Straffan was convicted of horse cruelty in 2012.

Kildare North TD Catherine Murphy inquired whether this conviction should have raised red flags when granting the company a license to run Ireland's only horse abattoir.

Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Michael Sheahan responded that the conviction “wouldn’t legally prevent” the individual from being a director, as the law requires no prosecutions within the previous three years for license eligibility.

The Public Accounts Committee has heard there were five welfare complaints since 2018, which the Department says was related to a farm next to the facility.
