Kildare TD Calls For More Rail Capacity Amid Overcrowding Concerns

One commuter who contacted the TD described trains from Newbridge as already being over capacity by the time they reach Sallins, with passengers forced to stand in aisles and crowd around doors.

A Kildare North TD is calling for additional rail capacity to be directed towards services in Kildare amid concerns over overcrowding.

Social Democrats transport spokesperson Aidan Farrelly says he has received complaints from commuters about capacity on services through Kildare, including the Grand Canal Dock route.

One commuter who contacted the TD described trains from Newbridge as already being over capacity by the time they reach Sallins, with passengers forced to stand in aisles and crowd around doors.

Farrelly has called on Iarnród Éireann to ensure existing InterCity rolling stock is redeployed to Kildare services as new battery-electric and electric trains enter the network.

Iarnród Éireann says it is currently operating all available trains outside of maintenance requirements and acknowledge that some services are under pressure at peak times.

The company says 285 new carriages have been ordered for the Greater Dublin Area, with the first 50 expected to enter service in 2027.

The first batch of new trains is intended for the Drogheda line and DART, but Iarnród Éireann says this should allow existing InterCity and Commuter Trains to be moved to other routes as capacity becomes available.

Farrelly says Kildare should benefit from that redistribution, adding that the county cannot be "left behind" as the rail network expands.
