It is hoped the station will be transformed into a community hub
Kildare County Council has issued progress updates on the recently vacated Fire Station in Maynooth.
It is hoped the station will be transformed into a community hub.
KCC says preliminary investigative works are ongoing in preparation for a feasibility study.
It is also reviewing an asbestos survey that was carried out recently, given the "age and character" of the building.
An energy audit of the former Fire Station has been completed, and the report is being reviewed by the Climate Action Team, with a view to a potential Pathfinder funding bid, which if successful could secure 50 per cent of the costs associated with energy retrofit-related cost.
A geotechnical survey will take place soon, and will help to determine the condition of the structure and ground conditions.
This will then aid in a future feasibility study, which is described as "essential" to move the project towards design and Part 8 planning stage, and will also provide the data needed to allow the pursuit of grant funding.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Labour Councillor Angela Feeney welcomed the updates by the council:
"I'm delighted to hear that things are moving along in the right direction, I'll keep moving it along for the community, but I'm hoping that 2027 is going to be a good year for Maynooth for the [planned] community centre.
"Back in 2021, I put forward a motion, because I could see the plan was going to be to move the fire station and have the building vacated, I continue to put it on agenda to make sure it can be a reality for the town."
Cllr Feeney concluded that she was "very pleased" with the council's updates on progress so far on the project.
