Kildare LGFA Understood To Have Agreed To Refix U16 County Final, After Initial Refusal

It follows an initial refusal to reschedule the game

Kfm News understands a request for the rescheduling of an U16 LGFA Division 1 final between Kilcullen and Clane has been granted by the County Board.

It follows an initial refusal to reschedule the game, which was fixed for this weekend, with 10 members of the Kilcullen team set to miss the final because of a sporting trip in Spain that clashed with it.

Kilcullen wouldn't have been able to field a team as a result, with Clane GAA also agreeing for the game to be rescheduled.

According to the Kildare Nationalist, Kildare LGFA Juvenile Fixtures Secretary, Enda Walsh sent the following statement to Kilcullen advising that it couldn't be refixed:

“Congratulations on reaching the division 1 final. The fixture dates, including the finals and semi final dates. were ratified at the May county board meeting and have appeared in a number of fixtures reports since then. The finals date has always been the 17th of October.

“Unfortunately, we can't agree to a date after the ratified finals date. It's not allowed under the rules. We've received a number of requests to change dates for various reasons and have declined all requests. I appreciate that this is disappointing for your club.”

On social media, Kilcullen GAA said they were "extremely disappointed" by the initial decision for the game not to be rescheduled, writing:

"Surely common sense, and the wish to promote girls football and sport in general, can prevail.

"Our girls have won the right to compete in the division one county final and should be allowed do so."

Kfm News did request a statement from Kildare LGFA on that decision, however did not receive a response.

An update on the situation was given on this morning's Kildare Today show.

Development Chair with Kilcullen GAA, Martin Murphy, said that Kilcullen GAA's secretary received a call last night (14 October) from the Chair of Kildare LGFA, James Fagan, saying that the game would now be moved to a different date, with details to be discussed at the next County Board meeting in the next two weeks.

"They spent a lot of time fundraising for the trip to Spain, they were stressed about it, but they just want to play football," said Mr Murphy.

"The girls want to play, they're obviously a great group of girls, but they obviously play different sports, so we want to make sure that as a club that they play soccer but also play in the GAA final that they've worked so hard for."

In light of this understood update, Kfm News has requested a statement from Kildare LGFA.

No response has been received at time of publication.
