He also believed it would ease traffic congestion as a result
Kildare Senator Aubrey McCarthy has called for missing greenway links in Naas to be completed.
Speaking in the Seanad, Senator McCarthy believed more children would cycle and walk to school if they were completed, easing traffic congestion as a result:
“One in four Naas pupils attends school in the Killashee and Piper’s Hill area, adding to daily traffic congestion. Imagine how much better things could be if more children could walk or cycle safely to school.”
He also called for progress on the proposed greenway along the old Tullow railway line, which would connect schools and residential areas with the town centre, Sallins, the Grand Canal Greenway and the railway station:
“Naas has a great network of walking and cycling routes, but important links are still missing. One dangerous crossing can be enough to put a family back in the car. We need to join these routes up and make safe, everyday journeys possible.”
The Senator spoke positively about the recent NTA proposals for bus services in Naas and Newbridge, which would include routes every 30 minutes, with "over 85 per cent of residents living within 400 metres of a stop".
One route would link Piper’s Hill with Naas town centre and Sallins railway station.
The NTA’s public consultation on the proposed Naas and Newbridge Town Bus Services closes at 5pm on Thursday, 12 November 2026.
