An environmental action programme for primary schools is urging more schools in Kildare to take part for the new school year.

Picker Pals had 1,500 classrooms participating last year.

73 of those were in Kildare, only seven primary schools in the county didn't take part.

Speaking on Kildare Today, programme manager Gary Jones from VOICE Ireland, explains how it works:

"We send them out one of our packs, and in the pack there's a child and adult sized litter stick, gloves and a high-vis jacket, and each week in the school year, one child gets to take it home and on Monday they bring the pack back and tell the classroom where they went and what they found."

Across Kildare, there is roughly 1,825 children leading their families on litter-picking adventures in one year alone.

He added that they surveyed schools and have found that the average amount of litter collected each time a child leads their family on a litter-pick is about 2.5kg, which adds up quickly to almost 4.5 tonnes of litter across the county in one year.

They're main objective is to turn environmental care into something the children feel passionate about because they've been empowered with the role of leader in their family on the litter-picks.
