The "narrow" bridge can only take one direction of traffic at a time
A road traffic accident at a Canal lifting bridge in Monasterevin has prompted calls for traffic calming measures.
A vehicle collided with the bridge in recent weeks, causing it to be "put out of action for a period of time", according to Fine Gael Councillor for Kildare-Newbridge MD Kevin Duffy.
The "narrow" bridge is located on the R424 and can only take one direction of traffic at a time.
Following the incident, Cllr Duffy has called for measures such as a yield signs in both directions, as well as road markings, signage and potential traffic calming to improve the safety of the crossing.
In response, Kildare County Council said it will review location as well as the existing road markings and signage, to determine whether any changes to the current traffic arrangement could be considered.
KCC also noted that the area currently operates under a yield arrangement in one direction due to the limited forward visibility available to drivers.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Cllr Duffy said the existing markings and signage are "faded":
"The line markings and signage around the lifting bridge are the responsibility of Kildare County Council, and the bridge itself is the responsibility of Waterways Ireland, but the line marking and signage is faded, and is missing in a few spots.
"So we want to get that refreshed and make sure people are aware as they approach the bridge, so caution and safety is taken," he added.
The Monasterevin LEA concluded by saying that he hoped the improvements could be "made in the coming months".
