Irish Children Are More Physically Active

Study shows challenges remain.

Better infrastructure is needed to encourage more children to cycle or walk to school.

That's according to researchers behind the latest report card on physical activity for children and teenagers.

Overall the report showed across Ireland, children were more physically active than eight years ago.

Speaking on 'Kildare Today', UCC lecturer Wesley O’Brien says inequalities remain.

The Irish Wheelchair Association says it's not surprised the new report found children with disabilities aren't getting enough physical activity.

The Active Healthy Kids Report Card says overall, there's been a slight improvement in physical activity levels in children and teenagers across the island of Ireland in recent years.

The grade for 2022 rose from a D to a minus C grade since 2016.

However, when it came to activity levels for children with disabilities, Ireland and Northern Ireland received an F.

Director of Sport, Irish Wheelchair Association, Nicky Hamill, says accessibility to gyms and recreation spaces need to be improved
