PTSB research shows while the proportion of people who believe they will never be able to buy a home has fallen to just shy of 40%, the picture is different for younger generations.
It found 52% of under 35s believe they will never be able to afford a house, with a majority actively considering social housing or long-term renting.
61% of that younger cohort are considering social housing and 55% are looking at long-term renting as ways to secure a home.
Research from Daft.ie has found the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment nationwide is currently just over €2,200 euro per month and over €2,600 in Dublin.
There were just under 2,400 homes available to rent nationwide on 1 August, an increase of 5% on the same date a year earlier.
Availability in Dublin fell by almost 20% over the year, to fewer than 1,150 homes, while across the rest of the country it rose by 40%.
The number of properties to rent remains below pre-pandemic norms, when there were typically over 4,300 homes to rent at any one time.
