He sat beside the dock in a wheelchair and did not react when sentenced
Former swimming coach and convicted paedophile George Gibney has been jailed for fifteen years and six months for the sexual abuse of children.
The 78-year-old was convicted of thirty-nine counts of indecent assault against four girls and one count of attempted rape of one of the girls between 1971 and 1981.
George Gibney sat beside the dock in a wheelchair and did not react when the sentence was announced in court 9 of the CCJ.
Mr Justice Mícheál O'Higgins described the offending as ‘repulsive’ and commended the victims, who were aged between eight and 15 at the time for their ‘powerful’ and ‘dignified’ victim impact statements.
The judge said the abuse was premeditated, a gross breach of trust and in a predatory context where he abused his position of authority to access and assault the victims.
He said the offending was repeated and set a headline sentence of 16 years and eight months, with the final 14 months suspended.
