MEP Calls For Wrong Way Motorway Driving To Be Treated As Attempted Murder

It comes as the Government is considering the introduction of new legislation making the action its own offence.

An MEP is calling for wrong way driving on the motorway to be treated as attempted murder.

Billy Kelleher says it shouldn't be a traffic offence, given the serious criminal element to the behaviour.

It comes as the Government is considering the introduction of new legislation making the action its own offence.

It follows the collision on the M9 in Moone which killed five teenagers and seriously injured another family, just a week after a similar incident resulted in nine injuries, after a car travelled the wrong way down the M50.

The three sisters and 7-year-old boy remain in hospital, two of the women in a critical condition.

Yemi, the young boy, is said to be having surgery today.

A fundraiser set up for those seriously injured in the wrong-way crash on the M9 has raised over €500,000 euro, with a vigil taking place on Friday evening at 6:30pm at St Clares church in Graiguecullen.
