16 fines to increase
Speeding, mobile phone use and not wearing a seatbelt are just some of the road offences set to get a doubling in penalties from tonight.
In total, there will be sixteen fines increased in a bid to make roads safer.
There have been 123 deaths on Irish roads so far this year.
Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton says the measures are a necessity:
Speeding on the roads will be the main focus of the Road Safety Authority's Annual International Conference.
The event at Croke Park will hear from a series of experts on how the issue is being tackled in their countries.
