The boys, aged 16 and 17, were originally charged with causing serious harm to Mr. Coughlan.
Two teenagers will stand trial on murder charges in connection with the death of Alex Coughlan in Blanchardstown.
The 37-year-old suffered serious injuries during an assault on the Mill Road in May, he later died in hospital.
The boys, aged 16 and 17, were originally charged with causing serious harm to Mr. Coughlan.
They were also charged with robbing his bank cards and a gold ring.
Today both boys appeared separately before the Children's Court.
A garda told the judge the 17-year-old's assault causing harm charge was being withdrawn and a murder charge introduced in its place.
He added the DPP's direction is a trial in the Central Criminal Court.
The robbery charge will remain in place.
In a separate appearance for the 16 year old, a different garda told the court the same directions have been issued in respect of that boy.
He is also to face a trial on a murder charge.
Both boys were remanded in custody to appear again in the near future.
