The news emerged earlier today.

Mark Cavendish will retire at the end of the current season.

He's recorded 53 grand tour stage wins to date and is joint top of the all-time list of stage victories in the Tour de France.

The Manx rider is currently ninth in the points race on the Giro D’Italia.
