It's due to the lands along the bank beside Dominican Lane being "largely unregistered"
Kildare County Council are finding it difficult to remove derelict boats from the Grand Canal in Athy.
It's due to the lands along the bank beside Dominican Lane being "largely unregistered" on the online system, making it difficult to organise a plan for the removal of the three boats.
KCC said that The Strategic Projects and Public Realm Department have engaged Legal Services to determine landownership in the area, and that this would have to be determined before a plan is configured to remove them.
"It's a huge process, for some unknown reason there is a slight gap in that section of water of who is responsible for it, it actually falls into no-mans-land," said Labour Councillor for Aoife Breslin on Kildare Today.
"Athy is one of the most beautiful towns in Ireland, there's huge prospects going on it, I just need this work done."
There is a total of three derelict boats left to be removed from the area of Athy, with others having been taken away previously.
She praised the work of Cliff Reid and John Lynch who have tried to resolve the issue over the years, as KCC is also in contact with solicitors.
Cllr Breslin urged the boat owners to "please remove them or contact us, and we will assist you".
"It's a fantastic area, we have great plans for it, but until we remove these boats, there's very little we can do," Breslin concluded.
