Kildare County Council Listed In Top Six Local Authorities To Achieve High EPA Standards

Kildare County Council

The Environmental Protection Agency has released its latest report on environmental enforcement performances of local authorities in 2024

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its latest report on environmental enforcement performances of local authorities in 2024.

Kildare County Council received 18 out of 19 National Enforcement Priorities (NEPs), putting them in the top six local authorities that achieved high performance scores.

Meath, Dublin City, South Dublin, Fingal and Cork City councils also achieved high performance scores.

The five lowest performing local authorities were Leitrim County Council, Galway City Council, Sligo County Council, Clare County Council and Donegal County Council.

The report highlights improvements in areas such as tackling illegal waste activities and the enforcement of construction and demolition waste.

However, it also points to the need for increased focus on water, air and noise enforcement to fully deliver on the National Enforcement Priorities.

The unauthorised extraction of peat was noted as a significant environmental issue in some local authority areas in the report, with Kildare being found to have widespread illegal and commercial peat extraction occurring.
