People have been asked to be vigilant of scam phone calls
Gardaí have asked for people to be vigilant after an incident of 'vishing' was reported to Leixlip Garda Station recently.
The person was deceived out of a sum of money after a caller had pretended to be calling from the injured party's phone company.
Vishing is a cybercrime scam where fraudsters use phone calls or voice messages to trick people into giving away sensitive information.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Naas Garda David Prendergast said that it happens regularly:
"It is something that is happening almost on a daily basis, people are constantly being duped.
"We're all aware of these strange phone calls coming in, and we just ignore them, but they are getting through to some people, and they're at a loss because of it," he added.
Garda Prendergast also advised people to adhere to the following advice in the case of a vishing incident:
1. Beware of unsolicited telephone calls.
2. Take the caller’s number and advise them that you will call them back.
3. In order to validate their identity, look up the organisation’s phone number and contact them directly.
4. Don’t validate the caller using the phone number they have given you (this could be a fake or spoofed number).
5. Fraudsters can find your basic information online (e.g. social media). Don’t assume a caller is genuine just because they
have such details.
6. Don’t share your credit or debit card PIN number or your online banking password. Your bank will never ask for such details.
7. Don’t transfer money to another account on their request. Your bank will never ask you to do so.
8. If you think it’s a bogus call, report it to your bank.
