'Moving Animal Welfare Forward' will be in place until 2030
Kildare South TD and Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon has launched Ireland’s new Animal Welfare Strategy 2026–2030, Moving Animal Welfare Forward.
The strategy is intended to promote high standards of animal welfare, strengthen enforcement and governance, improve public awareness, support research and innovation and enhance collaboration.
Launching the strategy, Minister Heydon said: “Ireland’s new Animal Welfare Strategy brings together Government, local authorities, farmers, animal owners, veterinary professionals, animal welfare organisations, researchers and communities in pursuit of a common goal of moving animal welfare forward.
“Our ambition is to continue improving animal welfare standards through science and evidence-led policymaking, effective legislation, stronger enforcement and greater public awareness. While legislation and enforcement are essential, all of us have a role to play in good animal welfare – that includes responsible ownership and speaking up when we see an animal in distress," he added.
Based off five key metrics, the plan hopes to achieve high standards of welfare for animals, Strengthen enforcement and governance, Improve public awareness and supporting education, while also supporting innovation and research, along with collaboration with key partners.
The Department said it sought to capture views from as wide a spectrum of society as possible, including a public consultation process, consideration of the report of the Dog Control Stakeholder Group which is also published today, as well as animal welfare commitments in the Programme for Government (PFG) and the Department’s Statement of Strategy.
It has described the ongoing consultations to prepare the strategy as "central"
The new Strategy, is available to view at the Department’s website.
