Educate Together welcomed the survey results, described as "the first of its kind in Ireland"
A new survey by the Department of Education has revealed that 44 per cent of families in Kildare would prefer a multi-denominational education.
Nationally, 40 per cent of parents in religious-run schools would prefer multi-denominational education as well.
These numbers contrast with current school provision, whereby 95.1 per cent of primary schools nationally remain under denominational control.
St John's National School in Monasterevin had the highest result of parents who would prefer a multi-denominational education at 75 per cent, while only 14 per cent of those surveyed at Kilberry N.S in Athy and Scoil Naomh Brighde in Edenderry were in favour of it.
Educate Together has welcomed the survey results, which was described as "the first of its kind in Ireland".
Schools received their school specific survey results in June and have been asked to engage with parents and other members of the school community before deciding if they want to express interest in changing patronage.
Recently, the closing date for schools to apply for patronage transfer was extended to 30 November, to give schools more time to engage with the local community and consult with parents and families.
There are currently five Educate Together primary schools in County Kildare, along with five other small multi-denominational schools.
This means that of the 101 schools in the county, only 10 have a multi-denominational ethos.
Educate Together says this means parents in many parts of Kildare have "no choice" but to send their children to a denominational primary school.
